The rusalka is a character of Slavic mythology in the form of a girl with long loose hair, dressed in an unbelted wedding shirt. Contrary to the image formed in popular culture, in Slavic mythology, a rusalka has never been the owner of a fish tail. Such an accessory is possessed by other water maidens - pharaonkas or sirens (mermaids). It was believed that rusalkas took care of forests, fields and waters.
